Landed little before lunch at SFO, gave me just enough time to make it to my reservation at A16. We had the funghi and pomodoro pizza. I have to say I was a little disappointed in the food. I much prefer the pizza at delfina. The crust was overly chewy though it had a nice char. Toppings were just...okay. It's hard to say what was missing but it just didn't click. I had a porcini pizza from delfina about a month ago that was amazing, maybe A16 needed something creamy to bring their mushroom pie all together. The pomodoro was a little better, the quality of the cherry tomatoes was evident but on the whole, a bit boring in the flavor department. Service was great though, as it has thus far been everywhere I've eaten in SF.
I had originally planned to try Nopa, but didn't feel like it. Decided to just go to Pizzeria Delfina since I enjoyed it so much my first time. This is exactly the typeof restaurant I wish I had right by my house! No pizza since we had pizza for lunch(honestly, I could've eaten it again but my companion didn't feel up to it. Lightweight!) We had the panzarotti, cannelloni and sardines with salsa verde. Fried little mini calzones, enough said, they were delicious. The cannelloni was great as well. The sardines were piped with this cannelini bean purée after being grilled(whole, including the head! Love.). The purée was great as was the actual fish, but the salsa verde was a bit overpowering, too herby and in the end unnecessary for me. A squeeze of lemon would have been welcome as well. Still, I love watching the cooks putting so much thought and care into the food. For example, one of the sardines head separated when coming off the grill and it was promptly tossed and a new fillet was on the grill. Anyway, too full for dessert, that was it for eating that day.
Saturday breakfast: didn't want to go very far for though I had originally planned to go to Dottie's, we ended up at Brenda's. I don't know how good Dotties and Mama's are but Brenda's hit the spot this morning! We started with the beignet flight: awesome. The choc. and crawfish were my faves. We then foolishly ordered an entree each. It ended up being way too much food as we had eaten almost every bite of the beignets. Such a shame because the food that came after was so yummy as well. I had the granola pancakes and companion had a special, an oyster bacon omelettey thing. I don't remember hers really since I don't eat eggs(as eggs) but it looked really good with obvious oysters sticking out here and there. Oh, but those grits that came with...heaven, on a slightly chilly morning(to this Angeleno at least). And the biscuit! If I had just ordered those two things I wouldv'e been more than satisfied. The chunky strawberry jam was delicious with the biscuit also. I was barely able to eat half a pancake, two comes to the order. It was quite tasty, I liked the crunchy bits of granola that caramelized on the griddle. It didn't need any syrup since the granola and fruit added enough sweetness for me. I couldn't really judge the merits of the pancakes itself because the granola changed the equation too much. Good strong coffee plus all the above made for a happy tummy that lasted me pretty much all day.
After waddling out of Brenda's to the muni, we arrived at the Ferry plaza farmers market. Since we were flying back to LA, I didn't get any perishables or delicates. But I did pick up some stuff from Marshall's honey and Rancho Gordo as I cant get those things easily here! Stopped by Acme, again, and amused the guy with the amount of stuff we bought, again. Considered getting some cheese from Cowgirl and some meats from Boccalone but decided I didn't have room for that before getting on the plane :(. Still had just a smidgen of time left before leaving so we hotfooted it to Bi-rite creamery. A delicious decision on my part! Got a small cup with salted caramel and rickenela. While both were good, the rickenela was the clear winner. Still crispy chunks of snickerdoodle, yum! Tons of cinnamon flavor and specks in the ice cream, it went well with the slight bitterness of the salted caramel. Honestly I like my salted caramel really salty and this tasted more like a burnt caramel flavor than salt. It still complimented the rickenela really well. We also tried a dark chocolate cookie that was great, like a crispy edged, chewy middled, not too sweet Oreo. Wouldve been great sandwiched with ice cream...
Again, I can't say enough good things about your lovely city. I am wicked jealous of how much delicious and accessible places to eat there are. I will slowly try to work my way around but that might take a while sadly. Mayhaps I should move here! :p
