Our first dinner was at the Alchemist, a brew pub in Waterbury that was in the style of a gastropub. Very lively crowd on Thursday night with delicious food, made with great care. We loved the mussels in a white wine, butter and thyme sauce and the red rice, beans and homemade andouille sausage.
Lots of choices of beer which delighted DH.
Friday night was our dinner at Hen of the Wood and it lived up to all of our expectations...think Gramercy Tavern in the basement of an old grist mill with natural beams, stone walls lit by dozens of votive candles, an open kitchen and a very knowledgeable wait staff. Our first courses of fried oysters that surpassed our former favorites at the former Mike and Tony's in Park Slope, and calamari sauteed with lemon oil and chili were great starters. We shared duck breast with mustard seed cabbage and wild halibut served over garlic pureed potatoes with wild arugula...couldn't decide which was more delicious...then the cheese course of Jasper Hill Bailey Hazen Blue and another Vermont cow's milk cheese were served with candied fennel and apple butter. I can't believe we had room for dessert, but I'm glad we did...butterscotch pudding with salted caramel and chocolate crunch...every bit as good as it sounds.
Saturday night we found a real winner in Stowe (recommended by our server at Hen of the Wood)
Santos was a creative latin, fun amazing surprise...Everything from the amuse of a tostone with shredded beef and a cilantro chimmichurra, to the composed salad, delicious soup, fabulous cerviche of ahi tuna and shrimp was an explosion of flavor. DH, who never orders the vegetarian entree, decided to give the vegetarian paella a try and he wasn't sorry...it was perfect, as was my snapper with root vegetable tamale...dessert was a proper chocolate souffle with dulce de leche creme anglaise...need I say more?
Sunday morning breakfast was at the Dutch Pancake House in Stowe where they serve 12" Pancakes that are a little thicker than a French crepe...with about 25 choice of add-ins. We decided to go savory...I had the bacon pancake...DH had the potato, onion and cheddar served with applesauce. We headed home will very satisfied stomachs...
P.S. We stopped at Lake Champlain Chocolates on the way to the Interstate.
