Well, it was a quick 3 days, but well worth it!
1st night - Dinner - Alan Wong's - I loved it. My husband ordered the wrong things. Me - big eye ahi in arugula & tempura crust / wasabi beurre blanc w/ black sesame seeds - very very delicious - only problem was that crust started getting soggy towards end (there was so much of it!) Entree - Macadamia / coconut / cab sav sauced lamb chops - excellent. Hubby had Calif roll w/ Lobster mousse (I knew that would be a problem) - had ikura on top - was just plain wierd (but he let me eat his ikura, so I wasn't complaining), Entree - Opaha I think - (brain drain (?)) w/ ginger panko crust - fish was excellent, but crust was dry, thick & dusty - hubby inhaled & got some stuck to back of his throat & nearly choked to death, sauce had no discernable flavor whatsoever. Service excellent & very friendly - not snooty at all. Very fun people watching, too - I'd go back in a heartbeat - might have to find another date, tho!
2nd Nt - V-Day - Nanonano at the top of the Sheraton Waikiki. Thanks so much for this suggestion - it was perfect for V Day! Totally old style booths & service & gorgeous views. Each had a glass of Vieuve Cliquot - 'for the toast,' as the waiter said. Shared good ahi sashimi appetizer - could have been a little firmer, but still tasty. Hubby went for the ahi in avocado, aritchoke hearts, etc etc sauce - was a bit much, but still good. I had the veal chop - was one of the best I'd ever had. Turned down dessert, but were given nice zamblione (sp?) & strawberries & rolled choc bark, followed by frozen choc things on a plate billowing with dry ice fog anyway. All very totally throw-back, but really fun - harpist & flautist too - was a kick.
3rd Nt - SanSei Honolulu - Let me preface by the fact I love Sansei Maui - probably my favorite restaurant in Hawaii. Sansei HNL was very different - nice people, but nothing tasted the way I remembered it - ok ahi roll, but sauce just wasn't the same. Had an inside out roll that had sweet hot sauce on it & was disgusting, hubby had a marinted ahi slices over greens that were ok. Finally got something good - manila clams with great bread & great dipping juice & had to stuff down & run for the airport. oh well.
Hope I get invited on his next trip... BTW, the new spa at the Hyatt is very nice - they did a much better job than I expected - a lot of locals there for treatments - beautiful facility.
