Report from Harper's Ferry

Thanks to suggestions from this board, had several good meals in West Va. this weekend. Tried and enjoyed the Yellow Brick Bank in Shepherdstown--great atmosphere in a funky converted bank, nice open bar with a view of the back kitchen where good things are happening. Wine list ok, portions enormous. Excellent goat cheese souffle, flounder with local asparagus, and chocolate mousse. BF had a delish steak--although enough for three portions. One flat note was the brushetta we had while waiting for a table--bread too charred, limp tomatoes, no olive oil or anything to moisten the bread, and an odd puddle of mayonaise. Altogether good--definitely a surprise in what I thought would have been culinary wasteland.
Another dinner at Mezzaluna Cafe (sp?) in Charles Town (about 5 miles from Harper's Ferry) yeilded decent pasta dishes, big garlicky bread "knots" with our meal (as if we needed more carbs) and again, enormous portions.
None of this was authentic W. Va. fare, but fun finds nonetheless. Thanks, 'hounds!
