The recently-opened Canyon City BBQ in Azusa is well worth a visit if you're in the area.
It's run by some good ole boys who clearly know what they're doing with the meat and hardwood. They say it's Kansas City style, but I didn't ask them further about their exact methods.
The brisket and pulled pork were both smoky and amazingly tender. Sides, which include potato salad, macaroni salad, slaw, & beans, were somewhat lackluster but go for the meat. They also have tri-tip, pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken.
The atmosphere is very casual, like a roadhouse out of the mid-South. The service is excellent; a family operation.
It's located on San Gabriel Blvd. (the southbound split of Azusa Blvd. north of the 210), about 4-6 blocks south of Foothill, in a building formerly occupied by El Patio Mexican Food and still marked by El Patio's signage.
