Red Medicine: Prix Fixe vs. Off The Menu

Looks like I'll be taking the girlfriend to Red Medicine for her birthday. It'll be both of our first times eating there. I'm all for a great dining experience but I'd love to keep the cost as low as possible.

I was looking at their website, and it really doesn't look all that crazy expensive if we were to order off the menu. I'm guessing we'd order something like 2 small plates, 2 cold plates, 2 hot plates, dessert, and a round or two of drinks.

Are we better off doing that? Or should we go with a prix fixe menu? I called and spoke to someone yesterday, but I didn't get much details except for them saying that there is indeed a prix fixe menu that we select when we come in. After reading a bunch of the threads on here, it looks like our options are either a $60 prix fixe or an $85. Does anyone know the differences?

Also, if we do decide to just order off the menu, what are the must order dishes besides the Heirloom Rice Porridge?

Thanks for the help.
