Is Red Bamboo so bad (vs. Gobo)?

Dining in the West Village tonight with a fish and veggie-eating friend, and plan to meet at Red Bamboo. Seems like it gets mixed reviews, so is it all in what you choose or in how you feel about mock-meat? (Me? I love the stuff.) However, based on my single Zen Palate experience, if it's that quality I'd pass.

Then, there's Gobo, which seems based in an actual cuisine (Japanese). It might do, though I'd rather not spend the $17 per entree when I can get $10 or $12 at Red Bamboo; that is, unless one is light-years ahead of the other.

What say you, hounds?
