Just a report, in my quest for good fish on the Westside,we ate at at Ballona Fish Market last night. Even though it IS in a mall, the interior is well designed, and the kitcshy beach decor grew on me as I realized how much I loved my meal. Compared to my last disappointing meal at Rockenwagner this was awesome. For a fish eater it is a pleasure to look at a menu with such a variety of fish, each uniquely prepared , it was difficult to choose. I had Striped Bass, which was perfectly cooked, tender and sweet,served with light little carrot gnocci and perfect snap peas. My SO had salmon in a thymey burreblanc, which was very good, but mine was better.
I was less crazy about the dessert menu, bakery heavy items. We wound up splitting my SO's choice, choc chip cookie ice cream sandwich, which was dangerously frozen hard and laquered with chocolate to a clever little wobbly oval dish. A fellow diner, obviously a regular, leaned over to warn "what ever you do don't try to cut it! just take a bite". Dissecting it without flipping it off the dish was an exercise in teamwork...I guess that's romantic.
Also wonderful bread( of course) and very professional, not overbearing but precise service.
