Ray's in Long Branch, now Oceanic

Open under new management and a new name, a friend and I tried Oceanic for dinner last night. The service was intelligent and efficient, the staff warm and welcoming, but not intrusive. The food was disappointing, all around sub-par. My friend and I ordered the same thing, swordfish, so that precluded more extensive sampling, and I don't like to pan a restaurant based on one visit (especially since they have not been open long). Still, there were some dead giveaways that summed it up pretty thoroughly. The salads were pre-assembled, icy cold, and the greens were definitely old with some slimy, black edges here and there. The "house vinaigrette" tasted bottled and of poor quality and the bread was a sort of ball park variety Italian, and stale. My swordfish was requested to be medium, but was medium rare half way through the steak, and absolute rare from what I could see of the rest. Veg, carrots and bok choy, were badly cut and poorly cooked. Disappointing effort throughout.

The space is pleasant enough; it has not been redecorated since it was "Ray's." It is pleasant to enjoy the ocean views during the meal, and there are outside tables, too (resin chairs). It might be a nice stop for lunch on a pretty day, but the dinner prices were in the $24.95 entrée range, and the quality of the food, at least at this point, does not justify the price.
