Spent 2.5 hours this morning at the Greenlake PCC cooking class with Sureyya Gokeri. She is a Turkish cooking instructor. The theme of today's class was Mediterranean-innfluenced vegan dishes. It's a demonstration class where the students get to partake of what she makes and WOW was it great. Even if you are not into cooking you can sign up and just listen to her very charismatic and cheerful musings on food and family while she cooks and then have a spectacular lunch. She made a sweet potato and fennel saute; a garbanzo and lentil soup with ginger; a charmoula dip that is like pesto but with cumin and jalapeno; braised leeks and carrots; a spiced basmatic rice pilaf with cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, cayanne, ginger, allspice, etc. Then finished off with a fig compote. I am so not a vegan (neither is the instructor) but the rich flavors and spices with the sauted vegetables and rice made for a meal as satisfying as I have ever had.
