Ramen Lunch Set @ Mifune Restaurant, SF

Wandering through Japantown on Thanksgiving weekend, I noticed that udon specialist, Mifune, had added ramen to its noodle offerings. It's listed on the "NEW" section of the menu as ramen with pork broth, squid, shrimp and vegetables for $7. It's also available as part of a lunch set with a choice of second dishes for $9.30 before 5pm. The plastic model of the ramen, in this case with California rolls, looked appetizing, so I decided to give it a try.

I picked the tekka don, which turned out to have quite a generous layer of not bad maguro cut thickly. It had a few sinewy bits, yet was fresh and tender. The rice was quite highly seasoned and I almost didn't need any extra soy or wasabi.

I had hoped that some of Mifune's udon skill might elevate the ramen above the pedestrian, but no such luck here. The largish shrimp in the champon style mix were quite nice, but there were only two of them and not the four shown in the plastic display. Similarly, rather than full slices of fish cake, this had only a few slivers. I liked the Chinese leeks, but the Napa cabbage and bean sprouts were soggy and didn't have any complexity from stir-frying. The pork strips were tender but had little flavor and I couldn't find the promised squid. The broth was pleasant enough with a fresh taste though little depth. Though ordered hard, the noodles were barely firm and got too soft as they sat.

This performance puts Mifune at #32 in the current rankings.
