recent ramblings from Oahu...

This was my second trip to Hawaii, first to Oahu. Loved the island, so rich in culture and diversity, enjoyed the energy of Waikiki but fell more deeply in love with the windward side and north shore. Here are some fun food picks:

Waikiki*

Dukes - not crazy about the food, but went back several times for drinks and atmosphere.

Henrys - nice little produce store on Beachwalk. went back several times for pineapple and papaya.

Tikis - dinner was yum. The clams appetizer with garlic sauce was very good.

New Otani Hotel lounge - AWESOME pu-pus and drinks.

Alan Wongs - Couldn't find a flaw from making resies to being sent forth with aloha. Honestly, one of the best meals I have ever had and worth every cent(#1 still holding with Spago) The poke special appetizer was a hit, our fish entrees were excellent and we ended the night with some unforgettable goodness - haupia flavored ice cream in a coc nut shell made out of chocolate and mac nuts. And the chocolate soup from the chocolate sampler menu was supremo.

Windward Coast*

Boots and Kimos - glad we checked this place out. Oh, what I would do to get my hand on the recipe of that delicious mac nut sauce! Excellent on top of anything (old shoes, chewed up dog toy) but me liked it best on the banana pancakes.

Shrimp Truck - unnamed just passed Giovanni's. uber-garlicy finger lickin' good shrimp, with rice and a guava juice. Mmmmmm.... The coconut shrimp was good as well. Kicking myself for not going back again...

Aoki's - shave ice in Haleiwa, next to Matsumoto's. I think the line from G's and M's met somewhere in the middle of the north shore. ;-) Wonderful coconut flavored shave ice with mac nut ice cream and beans! And...................no line!

So my #1 food love from this trip was not Alan's, the shrimp truck, or the shave ice....but a little smoothie stand on the north shore that makes the most amazing treats using Acai (a delicious and ridiculously nutricious fruit from the Amazon) It is purple and velvety, and you can have it in a bowl with banana and granola or as a smoothie...it's cool and smooth going down and gives you a little spring in your step too. :-) Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

aloha~~~~~
