I went to 2117 on Sawtelle this saturday and had to do a quickie post.
Go there and have the soft shell crab special.
Well, it's called the Soft shell crab and risotto with arugala salad. I think it was about 29.95, and for that price you get two baby soft shell crabs very lightly battered in something like a tempura batter, deep fried, on a bed of dairy-less risotto and topped with an arugala salad. It's all bound together in a glorious harmony with a spicy sesame ginger soy vinaigrette. YUM.
The crab wasn't fishy smelling, not overwhelmingly fatty like some sushi bars can do, and soooo crispy! Well, at least the legs. The bellies were soft and chock-full of flesh, and the sweet kanimiso (the insides) paired so well with the vinaigrette.
The dairy-less risotto had a broth-based flavor and cooked al dente (wow!). Simply elegant.
And the arugala! I HATE arugala, but the ones they had here were not bitter, and the leaves were much... aesthetically pleasing, so to speak. I wonder if they used baby arugala?
The appetizers were awesome too, but you have to get the soft shell crab. Because it's seasonal, and I think the season is coming to an end. Now go!
