Travelled to Las Vegas this past weekend to begin my 30th birthday festivities. From Toronto I did some research on here beforehand and chose our group's dinner for Saturday night at Craftsteak after reading all the positive reviews. Fix was a Friday night spontaneous decision. Here is a quick review of the two spots:
Fix: 2 amazing lemondrop + infused vodka martini's to start, very heavy pours - excellent! Apps were shrimp cocktail with 2 sauces, traditional and creamy + friend had mini baked potatoes, both were very good. I had the scallops - some of the best I've ever tasted, each bite was incredibly flavourful. Companion had the margherita pizza which she liked, not being very hungry. We had what I assume is a waiter with the most wine knowledge choose a red as I am most familiar with old world and south american wine regions and the menu was heavy on California. Not that impressed with his selection given our description of the factors we were looking for and those we wanted to avoid, especially at our price point. Overall amazing food, medicore wine choice.
Craftsteak: 9pm reservations for 4 which they were not ready for; headed to bar for another round of off the charts good martini's - lemondrop, raspberry, key lime - fantastic. Hostess came to seat us as we were paying (ie not ready to leave) and was snarky about our unpreparedness - did not appreciate her attitude toward me. Nice semi-circle round table with view of whole restaurant but right in the heavy draft air-conditioning. Which quickly made us freezing with our bare shoulders. High point: the sommelier was fantastic! Wine history of our bottles of interest, history of his education and knowledge of wine. Two excellently selected bottles based on our likes/dislikes which is tough with 4 people. He even went so far as to heat the bottle and paste the labels so I could remember what we drank! Low point: our waiter indulged a bachelor party request near us to buy one of our friends a drink - given the extensive time we took picking a wine she declined the drink offer - very awkward to sit near this party after this. As you can see my whole description has been about the drinks. That's because the food was not memorable, I would even go so far as to say it was far below par. Given the family style we shared apps (shrimp, proscuitto, lobster bisque etc) that were ok. Shared 2 steaks (top sirloin and ribeye ) which were absent of much flavour. Plus sides (asparagus, fingerling potatoes, peppers) which were overdone. The food was almost instantly cold given the air-con, it was as if we were in a race to finish! Overall great wine, forgetable food.
A guess this wasnt exactly a "quick" review! Sorry about the length...Jaclyn
