I posted a request on May 18 for chow suggestions in East TN and West NC, and got several replies. We didn't have as much time as I'd hoped, so only got to Ridgewood BBQ in TN and Three Bros. in Asheville from what I'd learned on this board. Both were worth the trip. Thanks to all who commented, and other posters here with local info.
However, as good as Ridgewood is, everything is soooo sweet (Q sauce, beans, cole slaw, tea) everything loaded with sugar (the tea was my fault of course). To me, this sugar-in-everything syndrome seems to be far too common in the South and elsewhere in American regional food, for my taste anyway. Am I off base here, or do you folks agree that less sugar would be a good thing? And more to the point, is there good Q in these areas with sauce that has less sugar? (How is the vinegar-based sauce in the east?) We will be back in the Asheville (near Mars Hill) area for a long weekend over the 4th, and hope to try some other places with local type chow (Q and otherwise). Thoughts?
Also, the trip was a success in that we found and put down a deposit on a lot near Franklin NC (far west, just under the SMNP). Any chow suggestions in that area, since it looks like we'll be spending time there from now on?
Again, thanks in advance and I'll report back anything worthwhile we discover.
