Pupusas in Fresno

Krys Stanley's (formerly Stanley Stehpan) recent post on the I-5 finds in Buttonwillow reminded me that I needed to report on a similar find here in Fresburg.

The official name appears to be "Restaurant Rincon Salvadoreno Pupuseria Y Comida Mexicana" but above the entry the only word that stands out is "Pupuseria".

It's located at 302 N. Fresno St., NE corner @ McKenzie (not McKinley), (559) 442-1299, about 1/4 mi. north of Community Hospital. Easy access from N or S bound Fwy41, west one block from Tulare St./Divisadero exit, north to first light). There is a dirt parking lot in the rear and a few spaces along McKenzie and to the west of Fresno St. Open 10am to 9pm, closed Tuesdays.

The pupusas ($1.50 ea) offered are de queso, chicharron, revueltas, frijoles con queso, and queso con loroco. First visit I tried the latter three and they were wonderful. Larger (@ 5 in. diameter) than most, plenty of moist tasty filling. The cabbage slaw comes in a separate sealed jar with a fork as does the special red sauce. The slaw is very fresh as is the salsa served with warm tortilla chips. Last visit I had the combo plate, two pupusas, beans, rice, and fried plantano with crema, excellent and quite filling.

The menu has a host of caldos, mariscos and Salvadorean and Mexican dishes.

Caldo de Pata (salvadoran style soup) 6.75
Caldo de Camaron (shrimp soup) 9.50
Caldo de Pescado (fish soup) 8.50
Caldo 7 Mares (seven seas soup) 12.50

Tamal de Puerco (pork tamale) 1.75
Yuca con Chicharron (yuca with pork) 4.50

Carne Desebrada (shredded beef) 6.00
Salpicon (chopped meat) 7.00
Higado Encebollado (beef liver) 7.99
Birria de Chivo (marinated goat) 7.99

Beverages
Chilate con Nuegados en Miel (glutinous corn and cassava drink with honey) 5.00
Horchata or Chan 1.50
Kolachampan, Sangria, Jamaica, or Jarritos 1.25

Afternoons feature Ricos Tacos for $1 ea.

A little knowledge of Spanish is helpful when ordering, but not required. Also something I learned from a coworker is you must ask for the check, it is considered rude for them to bring it to your table without your requesting it.

If you go please report back, this is one "dive" I sure hope stays around for a while.
