Review: "Proper Pie Co."
2505 E Broad St #100, Richmond, VA 23223
Driving through Churchill today The "Proper Pie Co" sign came into view, and although my first experience wasn't a completely positive one, I decided to stop in and give them another try.
I really enjoy the open atmosphere and the friendly, eager staff who are clearly proud of what they purvey, and on my second visit I'm happy to confirm that they have much to be proud about with this little pie company, and their large selection of fresh, scrumptious, meat filled, vegetarian, and sweet pie, and traditional British groceries.
Pork Verde Pie - The pie crust on all the savory pies is the same; rich, perfectly seasoned, flaky, firm and buttery, and the perfect vehicle to transport, in this case, juicy, tender braised pork with Verde sauce that added a very mild hit of Tomatillo flavor to the filling. Every bite on this weighty wonder was better than the previous!
Sausage Roll - I've tried many sausage rolls and the giant served at Proper pie Co. far exceeds any I've had. The sausage filling was juicy, tender, gristle free, and over the top tasty by adding just a little yellow mustard on this baton of savory bliss.
Strawberry/Rhubarb/Blueberry Pie - The fruit had a bit of toothsome texture, allowing the flavor of each variety to perform solo before blending into a rock star trio on the tongue, and held firmly in a filling that was not overly sweet, and a crust that encompassed all the hallmarks of pastry perfection.
Chocolate Raspberry cream Pie - I'm going to gush a bit, because this was the best piece of chocolate pie I've ever eaten. Sumptuous, semi-sweet, velvety smooth chocolate and cool, sweet and fruity raspberry fillings entangled to dance divinely together under a blanket of whipped cream, over crunchy chocolate crust that raised every taste bud on my tongue in an ovation of gastronomical applause.....Perfect
First impressions can be lasting, but I've learned to always try something or somewhere twice before discounting them wholly, and in the case of "Proper Pie Co." not returning would have been at the expense of one of the best culinary experienced I've had in Richmond.
Proper, Proper Pie indeed!
