Primo's is my favorite doughnut ever. HOWEVER: big problem. Their doughnuts are not made to last. A buttermilk doughnut twenty minutes out of the fryer is incredible; forty minutes, pretty good. Two hours - starting to stale. Three hours - gross. Shortest half-life of any doughnut shop I know.
Now, most times, you just have to take your chances. Sometimes, you hit the honey-pot. Sometimes you get screwed and have to shoot a cup of their miserable coffee to get the congealed grease feeling out of your mouth.
But, and I should have realized this before, the real thing to do is to SHOW UP THERE AS THEY OPEN.
They open at 5:30 AM, and, for the first half hour at least, batches keeps coming out of the fryer every few minutes. Everything is gloriously hot. We showed up at 5:50. The place is filled with people. Everybody looks excited.
This is a ridiculously good experience. Best of all: cinnamon roll-like things. Delicate.
