PowWowRiver Grille-Amesbury (LONG)

Okay, once again...I wanted to absolutely love this place, I thought the atmosphere was great, warm, decent acoustics, funky...a great addition to the suburbs. DC and I started with a drink and although I wanted to try one of their martinis nothing on the menu peaked my interest. She had a sour apple and I had a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Apps. were crab cakes and a calamari salad. Although the calamari was cooked perfectly, it was fried and I was expecting grilled. The greens weren't dressed and overall I thought it was very disappointing and tasting overly strong of rosemary. DC had the crabcakes and shared, I found them to be "dirty" tasting and couldn't finish...I Love crabcakes.
Entrees were limited and frankly only two sparked my interest. I had the grill entree, choice of several grilled fishes or steak and I had swordfish mainly under duress because none of the other fish choices were very interesting (I try to order what I don't cook). It was served with a trio of sauces, which were very, very good. Aioli, mango salsa and tapenade. However, the swordfish was overcooked and served on top of mashed potatoes which was served over cabbage. I liked the cabbage well enough but had to send the plate back for replating because the potatoes were hot and cold?! Had they been microwaved? I wasn't remotely impressed with the potatoes.
DC had salmon special over rice and spinach and she said it was just okay and she felt the salmon was overcooked as well.
We opted out of dessert as nothing was terribly inventive enough to splurge and overall I was very disheartened about the meal. DC has eaten at their other restaurant on Plum Island and said it was much better. IMO I feel that if you are cooking very few items (preferable to me!) they should be stellar...these were not.
While I realize that I am a Chowhound and have high standards (also cook a ton myself)I could care less about pretention and complicated meals, just give me fresh food well prepared and I'm a happy person. I hope they improve their food although it is far enough away from me that I won't be back in the near future. Others have posted favorably about this place, would love to hear if I'd been there on an off night?
