After posting about what I thought were the best pork sandwiches of 2012 I received tons of feedback on Twitter, Facebook, and Chowhound. People who share my passion for pork gave me a long list of must eat sandwiches that I needed to check out. I decided to take their advice and have begun working through their list. Below are the sandwiches I have enjoyed the most thus far in 2013.
Sky Blue Sky Sandwiches: The Kingpin

I wrote about the Kingpin recently in a post I did on Sky Blue Sky Sandwiches. This is the first pork sandwich I’ve had that hasn’t been on a roll or a hero. I was nervous at first that I may not enjoy it as much but I quickly found it I was completely wrong in this assumption. The pork is smoked and slow roasted and you can taste this in every bite. This is great just with barbeque sauce but if you have toppings you’d like to add I’m sure they wouldn’t hurt.
Black Camel: Pulled Pork

This is the first Black Camel sandwich I’ve ever had which is surprising seeing as I’ve heard about this place for years. I can’t go back in time but I can right this wrong by continuing to check out Black Camel whenever possible and eating this sandwich. With the option to add hummus or barbeque sauce I went with the latter. Pulled pork on a roll is something I’ve always loved and this sandwich does that extremely well. I have since eaten everything on their menu and highly recommend any Black Camel sandwich you’re in the mood for.
Hadley’s: Pulled Pork

I originally had intended on going to Hadley’s to try their deep fried eggs benedict after friends had raved about how good it was. As soon as I sat down at the bar I saw one of these and changed my mind. This is the first time I’ve had cabbage slaw on a pulled pork sandwich and it worked really well. Along with baked beans this was a brunch experience I thoroughly enjoyed.
Phil’s Original BBQ: Pulled Pork

I really enjoyed Phil’s brisket sandwich and had no doubt I’d feel similar towards their pulled pork. Covered in bbq sauce and served on a fresh roll with a side of baked beans this reminded me a lot of Hadley’s but with a smokier sauce. Phil’s is a lot like Black Camel and Sky Blue Sky in that every sandwich on their menu is incredible. I look forward to returning soon and trying their ribs.
I post this with a lot of excitement knowing it will lead me towards the discovery of even more pork sandwiches around the GTA. I still have a lot of Leslieville, Danforth, and the west end I look forward to exploring from the earlier recommendations but will continue to follow the feedback and continue to learn more about the city through food.
