Places open for "Linner" in South OC

I guess my husband and I are old before our time or on a different clock than the rest of the world but we always have this problem and wondered if anyone can help fill in our South OC mealtime gap.

For some reason we are hungry between 3-5PM. Toast & coffee in the AM tides us over and then 'BAM' 3 o'clock hits and we're hungry. We drive and drive and can't find a place that's not Mimi's or some other cafe'/coffeehouse concept that's open.

We spent literally 2 hours looking for a place to have a pre-5 o'clock nosh over the holidays. Spent so long looking that we ended up in Laguna Beach at 5PM and thought "Oh well, we'll just have dinner then", and most of those restaurants don't open until 5:30.

Is it too much to ask to find a place to have a cocktail, some service, and maybe a cut-above your average chain experience mid-day?

Is this a South OC phenomenom or Restaurant 101?

Your thoughtful replies are appreciated.
