Guess what? There is a new xiao long bao place in Cupertino! It's called 'Hu Chiang dumpling House' and it is located in the same plaza as the Ranch 99 in Cupertino. I'm a Joe's Shanghai ( NYC) fan and their dumplings are my 'gold standard'. So how's Hu Chiang's XLB? Not bad but not as good as Joe's.
Went there on a Sunday evening about 6pm and there was already a 50 minute wait on the waiting list. From the time our number was called ( beware, they only called out in mandarin!), service was fast. We ordered the Hu Chiang special, the crab XLB and the fresh shrimp and chives dumpling. Each order had 8 dumplings and cost about $7-$9
per order. Didn't have to wait too long for our dumplings to arrive. The dumplings are a little smaller than the ones at Joe's but there was decent amount of 'soup' in the dumplings. It would have been nice if they lined the bottoms of the steamers with napa cabbage instead of parchment paper.
Overall, it was good. It's great for large groups ( lots of families there) since there were lots of tables for 10. Just be ready to wait though.
