Best place in So Cal to live...Chow-wise?

Where in So Cal do you think is the best place to live for a poor chowhound? I'm moving out of my current pad next year and I can move pretty much anywhere in So Cal if the rent is reasonable (e.g. 1bd at ~$900). Other people called me crazy for this but I knew you would understand :)

My current choices in order:

1. San Gabriel Valley - Undisputed Chinese food heaven. Cheap too. But I wonder if there are enough other choices besides Chinese in this area?

2. Downtown - Actually I don't think I can afford this area... I'd love to move into one of those loft places on the west side but oh well. Tell me if you have a solution...

3. West LA - This area is diverse and I'm not too familiar so someone can give specific suggestions. I do know the area around UCLA is a good choice(Westwood, Sawtelle etc).

4. Koreatown - I've lived there before so I know what I'm getting. In addition to Korean there's the excellent bonus of many great Mexican/Central American/Oaxacan places. And is a good spot to start out branching from.

As for suggestions the more specific the location the better, and other specific info/tips for the choices I mentioned would be appreciated. And if you live in a hidden gem of a place please do tell! Thanks in advance!
