place to buy coarse rye flour?

delta888 | Dec 9, 2004 11:33 AM

My sweetie's father is Latvian, and mentioned missing a specific dark rye bread that is essentially not obtainable in North America. I have a recipe for a bread that sounds correct for this, and I'm trying to locate a couple of ingredients.

I was hoping I could purchase sourdough starter, but haven't got a lead on that yet. However, since I can make that, that's not my cry for help.

I have been completely unable to locate coarse rye flour (such as Hodgson Mills brand) -- this is also known sometimes as rye meal (Bob's Red Mill carries it labelled as "rye meal", which is different than rye flour, which is finely ground).

Just so you know where I've tried:
- St.Lawrence Market
- Two bulk stores in Yonge/Eglinton area
- Noah's
- Kensington Bakery (on a suggestion from one of the bulk stores).

p.s. Yes, I also know about the bread that can be ordered from baltic.com. However, I believe I cannot get that bread in time for Christmas.

Thanks!
