We had a second dinner at Pilar this weekend. Pilar is a small, not terribly touristy gem on Main St. in Napa but doesn't get the coverage on this board that Zuzu or even Angele does. I'll start with the only negative which is the tightness of the dining room. Once we got our party of four shoe-horned into the table it didn't feel cramped.
I started with the grilled radicchio salad which was warm and cold, crunchy and soft, with salty bacon and sweet, tart dried cherries and balsamic vinegar. Not the most beautiful salad but utterly savory. Others raved about the crab cakes and an asparagus appetizer.
Next was cassoulet, rich and ducky and smoky, baked piping hot and topped with plenty of crispy bread crumbs. I tasted the steak with chimichurri (sp?) - also delicious.
Blood orange sorbet for dessert was sweet tart and totally refreshing.
