So a new place just opened up fairly near to where I live in Windsor Terrace. It took over the space that the Cheesesteak Factory occupied (a take-out place that never seemed to keep regular hours or have customers) in a little storefront at the corner of Prospect Park SW and Vanderbilt Avenue next to Uncle Louis G.'s WT outpost (closed for the winter). Named Piccoli, it's strictly a take-out and delivery place and serves mainly risotto as well as panini and a handful of other Italian specials.
Although skeptical, my partner and I ended getting some takeout there on a particularly cold night when we were too lazy to trek up to Park Slope. We kept it simple--she had a chicken milanese and I ordered the basic risotto with parmesan (reggiano, as it turns out). It was very good, far better than I'd expect from such a place. I was particularly surprised at the really excellent texture of the risotto--not overcooked or mushy, as is often the case even in a sit-down place. My partner said the milanese was cooked just right, with nicely flavored chicken (I'm vegetarian and so can't confirm). And the guy who runs the counter (the owner?) also seems really nice. Always a plus.
We have very, very few decent places to eat in WT, but I must say that I'm cheering for Piccoli. The location does not seem ideal, so it probably needs all the help it can get. But for the price (my risotto was $7.50, I think), it's really good, solid, and carefully made food.
