Inspired by the pho question below I decided to take the taitai to lunch. Looking for a never-tried pho place on Crenshaw north from Manhattan Beach Blvd, where there are several, I discovered a entire Viet shopping center.
In the small center are Hong Long Pho, Hong Long Banh Mi, and a supermarket with a steam counter that also sells banh mi.
We had lunch at the pho place where they were out of tendon so we settled for the rare flank pho. "Really cool" said the taitai! We also had the #52 grilled beef on bun. Also quite good and big.
In addition to the usual suspects (pho, bun, rice) they offered rice porridge which was labeled "chao". I assume it's similar to Chinese "zhou" but we didn't try it.
The market had an extensive steam table which looks like it might reward the adventurous chowhound. I just ordered iced coffee for 12 bits which was pretty good.
I looked at the menu at the banh mi place which seems like the real deal. I'll try later.
