Philly's Smoke House Report in LIC

Edward Aretz | Nov 27, 2002 09:04 AM

I went to opening night at Philley's Smoke House in Long Island City last night. I am very sorry to report that everything from the biscuts, to the fried foods, to the ribs were absolutely tasteless.

Located at the same address where Pearson's used to be, 5-16 51st Avenue, LIC Tel. 718-338-RIBS, the place is a major disapointment.

If you are interested, you better go fast because this place is not going to last. The decor looks alot like an old Bonanza Steak House with a tacky western theme and lots of signs that say "No Whining." It is a big place with two levels. On the lower level, they have a bar and the upper level they have a place for a small band where they plan to have blues music on Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately the band will only be seen by a small section of the restaurant. The place is too large for its remote location and the food is not good enough to attract crowds.

They have their own brand of amber beer (pretty good) that is made on Long Island. They have their own bottled hot sauce and barbeque sauce. The sauce is a thick tomatoe based sauce that does not have enough spices or vinegar. The ribs come out of a commercial smoker and are well cooked (although mine were cold) with pieces of scallion on them. They are blackened and were properly cooked. They just have no flavor and do not taste smoked. You do get a whole large slab with two bad sides for $15.95 though. Even the biscuts have no flavor.

They have lots of people working there and had a pretty good crowd for the first night. Unfortunately, I understand that the owners do not have any experience in the restaurant business. Hopefully they will learn how to make good "cue." If not they will lose a fortune and have a built out restauant in a location where nobody can succeed.

I will try it again in a week or so and report back.

P.S. They also have valet parking.
