I was surprised to find that picturesque Benicia is a fairly short drive from my mom's place in Walnut Creek. We went today and had a wonderful lunch at a Thai/California/Fusion restaurant called Petals located in the charming downtown not too far from the water.
We shared three appetizers and a salad and couldn't finish all the food. Crab cakes were sumptuous, juicy and shaped like generous-sized meatballs. They were lightly covered with a sweet sauce and topped with tobiko. We had one each. Lumpia was delicate and light--about ten in an order. Fried calamari had a tasty sauce and delicate batter and was extremely tender. All appetizers came with orange slices and pieces of mango, apples, cucumbers, melon, baby roma tomatoes, and grapes. The apple salad was a delicious blending of a caesar dressing, including parmesan cheese, over field greens and asian fruit salad.
This chef really knows her stuff. The overall flavors are light and delicate, but extremely satisfying. The decor is beautifully eclectic in a modern style with Asian touches. Service was perfect. The check before tip, including a Thai ice tea and a diet coke, was $36.
I can't wait to go back and try it for dinner.
