PDX: Sal's Famous Italian Kitchen

Has anyone else tried this place yet? It's a sit-down Italian-American place started by the Pizzacato people on Greeley and Killingsworth in north Portland. We went on Saturday night and I was pretty underwhelmed. Although it was very busy they were friendly and were able to seat us quickly. Our waiter, unfortunately, tended to dump our food on the table and not come back to check how we liked it.

I had a beet and goat cheese salad served with the dullest arugula I've ever tasted. I followed that up with Sal's Famous Ragu on pappardelle, which was also kind of bland, and the pasta was overcooked.

My husband had much better luck. He started with a grilled sardine special, and the bucatini with a lamb sugo, both of which were pretty darned good.

They seem to be looking to mine the same vein as Mama Mia's but doing it less successfully. But if you're in the neighborhood and it's not too busy it's an OK choice.
