Well, finally tried Mio Gelato on, I think, 11th next to Sur la Table and across from Powell's.
Very good. Not exactly the texture I think of when I think of gelato (and I just went back and read other posts on Mio and I seem to be parroting here) -- a little too creamy and not as dense as what I normally think of. But that doesn't make it less good just less like gelato, maybe, and more like French/American ice cream. I don't know. I'm not a gelato expert.
However, I know what's good and Mio is. I tried several flavors including the blackberry, grapefruit, coffee, and chocolate chip. All of these were flavors people with me got and so I tasted them plenty. I also got tastes of the gianduia, pistachio, and lime.
I ordered half fior di latte and hazelnut. The hazelnut is great, I think. I think the latte is very good as well, sweet, but not overly so, and a great second flavor to clear the palate from time to time.
Though I'm not a chocoholic, the gianduia was excellent, I thought. I thought the pistachio was a little light on flavor. My wife got the grapefruit and said it was mostly sour rather than grapefruity. I don't know if that's good or bad since grapefruit disgusts me. The coffee was a bit strong for me, but I'm a little coffee averse (I know, that's blasphemy in the Northwest). The blackberry was very intense.
I wish they had some melon flavors. I always like melon-flavored gelatos, but they had a good variety of other flavors anyway. The price is okay for gelato, two scoops for $2.95. That's a small. It wasn't a bad size for gelato. The service was very good (especially after my bad gelato experience in SF).
