[PDX] 42nd & Killingsworth Tacos: Ole Frijole and Taco Express

Can't find it right now, but a while back someone either here or Craigslist or asked about the two taquerias on the corner of NE 42nd and Killingsworth. Finally visited both tonight.

As good as Ole Frijole is Taco Express is bad. Night and day. Prices are definitely more expensive at Ole Frijole, but they also give bigger portions. I tried two tacos at each: carnitas and carne asada, $1.95 each at Ole and $1.25 at Express.

At Ole the tortillas were nicely refreshed, cooked a bit on the griddle. Meats were excellent. Carnitas were crusty and tender and moist. Carne asada had a nice charred flavor and was well-seasoned. They do the tacos semi-American style with two soft corn tortillas, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Nice salsas. The chile de arbol salsa had a well-rounded flavor.

At Express the tortillas fell apart, probably steamed. Meats were terrible. The carnitas were highly shredded into overly fried little bits. It reminded me of Jerky Stuff. The asada might as well have been boiled. Blah. Salsas were mediocre as well. Their red tasted almost like ketchup with a little chile.

I'll probably include both of these in a future report on NE taquerias, but I'm actually eager to return to Ole Frijole. Their tortas sounded really good.
