Everyday in July while Patisserie Claude was closed, I would dream of its quiches and sweets. I even broke down one evening and went to Tartine to buy a $5, melted tart (which actually ended up being tasty, albeit messy). But Claude is now back from vacation and finally, there is delicious French pastry at a reasonable price in the West Village. I went this morning around 8:30 am and there was a short line and trays of quiche, croissants, breakfast pastries, and brioche. The trays of eclairs and other sweets were being put out. I ordered the quiche of the day-spinach-which was heavenly as usual, with the custard-like center redolent of egg, cream, and a nutty, Gruyere-like cheese, the stringy spinach presenting a nice contrast in texture, color and taste, and the crispy, wonderfully flaky crust.

I think I know where I'm getting breakfast tomorrow...
