I just discovered a new place that has the best pastrami in New York City! In the past 45 years I have tried them all: Carnegie Deli, Katz's Second Avenue Deli, Stage, Pastrami King, Pastrami Queen, Pastrami and Things, Fine and Schapiro's , Bernstein's on Essex, etc. The quality of the pastrami at all of them, with the exception of Pastrami Queen and Katz's has seriously deteriorated over the years.
I just found this take out place, Schatzie the Butcher, at 87th and Amsterdam, 555 Amsterdam Avenue to be precise, that has the best pastrami sandwich I have tasted in years. In fact, it tastes exactly like the pastrami I used to get at Carnegie's Deli in the late 60's and early 70's before Leo Steiner took over Carnegie's Deli and tried to improve what was already the best pastrami sandwich in New York City at the time.
Schatzie's pastrami sandwich is large, lean, juicy and has a fantastic spiced flavor of garlic, cloves, mustard seed, pepper etc--a very complex mixture.
Schatzie's is an upscale butcher shop that is take-out only. I live two blocks away and get a pastrami sandwich once a week there, and occasionally I order what Schatzie calls "their dirty brisket beef sandwich"., which is also fantastic.
If you love pastrami as much as I do, I would give this place a try.
