Passing through Tangipahoa Parish

On our way back from a trip up I-55 yesterday, we veered off the interstate onto the parallel highway (51, I think) that passes through Tangipahoa Parish. We stopped for lunch at the Front Porch Restaurant in Roseland. It's a buffet lunch of the Southern country style -- very good fried chicken and fish, with lots of good sides: stewed whole okra, lima beans, mashed potatoes and "real" brown gravy, greens, macaroni & cheese, cornbread and biscuits, red beans, rice and sausage, and more, for $5.95. I assume that the offerings change from one day to the next. They had several home made pies for dessert; we both chose the lemon meringue, which was very good, not overly sweet, with perfect, tall, fluffy meringue. We would definitely stop there again.

It's open only for lunch on Monday through Friday, plus Sunday, but not on Saturday. Apparently they draw the biggest crowd on Sundays.
