I visited this upscale grocery while on a visit to Detroit from San Francisco. I went to school in Ann Arbor and based on my visits to Zingerman's and plenty of upscale fooderys in SF (including the new Ferry Building), can tell you that this place HOLDS ITS OWN with these food gastronomy emporiums.
Wow- from prepared foods to exotic produce (not a fan of durian but it's there, along with scads of things i'd never heard of....fuyu persimmons looks common along the offerings), esoteric scandanavian spices (lingonberry preserves from acquavit in new york) to catering to the wine "loft" (wine markups are much saner on the higher end bottlings stored upstairs than the nice but more common selection downstairs), I begged to go to back to this place before leaving town.
If you live here or visit and love food, check this place out!!
BTW, while still a marketing centric organization, those efforts blend into the fabric much more seamlessly than the much beloved but IMO, now overhyped, Zingermans.
Also, lunch here doesn't cost an arm and a leg and the free wireless "cafe" makes it easy to enjoy your booty there.
