pangaea/st orres gualala in winter

mark seiden | Jan 27, 2004 02:07 PM

was on the coast this weekend. had the fantasy of going to pangaea, which has moved from pt arena to downtown gualala. but despite the nominal hours, dinner wednesday through sunday, it was silently closed at 6:30 on sunday. no sign on the door.
707 884 9669. unfortunately, cell phones don't work in that part of the world, or i would have called to find out that they're closed for their winter holiday
for three weeks which happened to include this weekend!
grrh....

so instead we went 1 mi north to st orres, which has
previously been very pleasant. it's a prix fixe, $40, with a soup, salad, and a main. appetizers extra at $9 or $12, wine list with some reasonably priced bottles (e.g. navarro dry gewurz for $22 was not on
the list but they happened to have it). housemade rosemary bread, a country pate, crab cakes, red pepper soup, stuffed breast of pheasant with wild-mushroom risotto cakes, altogether quite satisfying. no espresso but good strong coffee (necessary to brave the curves on highway 1 going back to sf).

don't do that, stay somewhere up there.
