Pacific Whey Cafe

I had dinner at the Pacific Whey Cafe (closes at 9PM) in Newport Beach (2 locations - I went to Crystal Cove Promenade location).

Ordered their day special, free-range Chicken Picada, that was served with Blue Lake green beans, mashed potatoes, and mixed field greens. It was better than many fine dinner establishments! yet in just a cement floor cafe "to go" like setting (indoor and outdoor seating). I'd had breakfast there and while standard and good, it was just standard and good - like many breakfasts go. Their baked goods are the key if you're into baked goods. And the portions were huge at both.

Their mashed potatoes were absolutely the best, very strong potatoe flavor, drier than creamier, almost like just a baked potatoe from a big ice cream scoop. I remember those potatoes as the best I've had for a long time.

I don't know if they have the Chicken dish often, but their free-range chicken was very fresh, moist, very flavorful. They even had a few good wines - I had a "split" of Clos du Bois chardonnay. Who woooda thunk a small cafe was soo good. Definitely a "find" for me and my friends. Good quality, simple and fresh recipes. You serve yourself and there's no carpet, but that's the only diff from a great dinner establishment (oh, and the hours), IMHO.
