A friend and I tried Olives NY (in the new Union Square W hotel) last week and enjoyed our meal. Although, when we got there our table wasn't ready yet, and there was no comfy place to wait as the lounge of the W was hopping.
Our appetizer was great. We shared the carne crudo, which was beef tartare on top of mashed potatos, with toast to eat it on. There were several bass dishes on the menu, and my friend had the striped bass, which she really enjoyed. I had the venison, which was over cooked. For dessert we shared the vanilla creme brulle, which was also very good. It came with vanilla ice cream on the side and a vanilla sauce that was poured in it. A triple threat.
Service was friendly and the chef/owner Todd English came over to our table to chat. It is also an interesting room, with some tables on the second floor that are currently being used for private parties, according to our waitress.
My only complaint is that the bathrooms are so far away, through the lounge and past the check-in desk, up the stairs and down a hall. I am not sure how mediterranean it was, but we enjoyed the food and would go back.
