Well, we all had a fantastic time and had some great chow. As always we didn't get to every place on our itinerary. Why is it time in NYC passes so much more quickly than anywhere else?
So, here's what we ate on our budget friendly NYC trip.
30th & 31st December - ate in Newark & Jersey gardens Mall.
NYE evening we had reservations at Nolita House. Heard great things on here about the place so we were all excited to try it out. Indeed, the food was superb. We started with a cocktail each and shared the home made chips with guacamole. Best fresh guacamole I have ever tasted. Chips were very moreish. My husband and friend both had the Beer Blessed Turkey Chilli. It was delicious though probably could have been a little spicier. I had the Meat Lovers Pizza - it was huge! The crust (my favourite part) was nice and crisp, there was a generous portion of meat and cheese. It really was a delicious pizza. The only thing that for us let Nolita House down was the atmosphere and attutude of both the staff and patrons already in there. Yes it was NYE. Yes it was full of regulars. But that doesn't excuse us being made to feel a little unwelcome, in particular from the hostess who when I said we made a reservation through opentable piped up "Really? Are you Sure?" in a sarcastic manner and then when checked and realised that yes we did have a res, huffed and puffed because they had to find us a table. We almost left there and then but as visitors to NYC we didn't really know where else to try on NYE and were looking forward to it. Needless to say we left after the food and headed to Times Sq.
Brunch at Bubby's was excellent. We started with a Bellini which just had the right amount of peachness, and the right level of fizz. Eggs, sausage, pancakes... all lovely.
For dinner we were in the Penn Station area and were tired and just needed someplace to eat, so ended up at Tick Tock Diner. Mistake really. The food was average at best, but it served a purpose.
Friday 02 January
Headed to Clinton St for pancakes - 2 hour wait so we didn't get there on this trip. Had breakfast at a diner we stumbled actoss on E Houston - Remedy Diner. Was actually ok.
Dinner was at the Jersey Devils game.
Saturday 03 January
Breakfast at Empire Diner. French toast dipped in vanilla Haagan Daazs. Yum Yum.
Dinner at Wildwood BBQ. We didn't plan to go there but somehow ended up there. It was very good. Pulled pork was juicy, smoked chicken very tender. Creamed spinch delicious along with the chips. Good beer selection. Very nice meal actually.
Ended up at Rice to Riches for dessert a bit later on. I always have the mascarpone and cherry - it is to die for.
Sunday 04 January
Lunch - Shake Shack. And I agree wholeheartedly that it is the best burger I've ever tasted. I had a simple hamburger and it was so good I wished I'd had a double like my husband. Meat tasted like steak. Not sure what type of bun it was but it was light tasting and had an interesting texture. Fresh lettuce and tomato. Chips were delicious as well, especially with mayonnaise.
Dinner - Blue Smoke and I have to say the BBQ was amazing. My friend and I shared the Rib Sampler for two. Texas beef ribs, baby back ribs and spare ribs. The ribs were juicy, right amount of smoke and nice and meaty. My husand had a platter of pulled pork and kansas ribs. Best pulled pork ever tasted. We shared mac and cheese. Wow wow wow. mash and fried onions. Yum yum. Great strong cocktails too. Best meal of the trip.
We had loads of places on our list that we just didn't get to - burger joint, clinton street, peter luger, artisanal, balthazar, the smith...... next time i hope.
