I trolled the bay area board for food advice for my short trip to San Fran last month. I didn't try as many places as I would have liked but I hope to return soon.
First order of business after arriving at SFO was stopping into La Palma Mexicatessen on the way in. No potato chips that the Big Dog expounded on were to be found but the pupusas were a revelation. I'm still thinking about those a month later.
Strange to go from NYC to San Fran and get a barbecue fix but I haven't visited my folks in Houston for awhile so I stopped into Memphis Minnie's and was very happy I did. Was totally crestfallen that they ran out of brisket but had the pork platter and after a few beers at Toronado later, I finally got over my disappointment. Was planning to go back here for brisket before I left but decided on stopping into La Palma on the way out to the airport on Sunday and they were closed!
Haven't been for dim sum in NYC for awhile so not sure if it's a fair comparison but I thought Ton Kiang would stack up against anything we have here - very consistent high quality and taste for everything. I did make it to Bombay Ice Cream twice - had the fig and saffron flavors and was most satisfied.
