Has it really been 3 years since I last had a pie here? With all the talk about New York pizza, I dropped in to NY Pie on Fourth and Brookwood on Monday night. I was happy to see that Jeff was manning the oven, as he made the first taste I'd had here and has fired the best examples I've had from this pizzeria. I ordered my favorite, the Neopolitan, which has sliced tomatoes, garlic and basil, and asked for it "charred".
The crust is still very good, and the sauce was more vegetable/tomato-like and less sweet than the last outing. Beautiful whole basil leaves, at least one and sometimes two per slice, and just the right amount of garlic to know its there but not hit you over the head (or repeat all night). I was sorry I forgot to ask for the slosh of olive oil before it's baked, as that would have been the icing on the cake so to speak. The crust wasn't quite as charred on the bottom as I would have liked and the middle of pie got soggy from the fresh tomatoes. And even though it looks more substantial in the photo, the crust is less than 1/8" and has that NY gluten-y chew. But all in all, a very good pie and enjoyed even more for breakfast the next day. The "Arnold Palmer" ice tea and homemade lemonade was very refreshing and is a bargain at $1.25 with refills.
A second location opened at 2700 Yulupa Ave in the Annadel Center. I tried it a while back and wasn't as happy with the pizza execution there, so I'm happy to know that at least the original is still in fine shape. NY Pie now delivers from that location, Thursday through Sunday after 5pm. Maybe the kinks have been worked out and it's on track by now. I also had the side salad with homemade blue cheese dressing that time, and recommend that.
