About a month and a half ago, my wife got to go to Nobu for a work function and I had to admit I was very jealous as we had never been there together. Her raving about it made me more jealous, but I could not get a reservation. A couple of weeks later she told me she got us a reservation for this past Friday (2/27). We went with 3 other people, so we really could experience Nobu the way it's intended, as a sharing place.
Let me say I was not only not disappointed in the least, but even with high expectations I was thrilled. First, we had a fairly early reservation (6:45), so they seated us right away, even though we were still waiting for 2 more in our party. The space is nice, but not overdone and the service was outstanding. Our waiter was very patient, very nice, and made excellent suggestions.
I don't remember everything we had, but I know we started with the tuna sashimi salad and the lobster & shitake mushroom salad. Both were excellent. We also had some sushi rolls and pieces, including the best eel roll I have ever had. We also had an appetizer of a white fish sahimi. This was one of my favorites. It is not something I would normally have thought to order, but we did on the waiter's suggestion. It was out of this world.
For the hot food we moved on to squid noodles. There are no real noodles in this one. It is really nice sized pieces of squid with grooves vut into them, to make it look like noodles. They are served over slivers of asparagus. This dish was also great. We also had the beef tenderloin in teryaki(delicate and tasty), rock shrimp tempura in a spicy creamy sauce (one of my favorite dishes here), a rock shrimp and lobster dish in a spicy lemon sauce, and one or two others that I am forgetting, but were equally outstanding. The meal was topped off by the waiter's recommendation of their signature dish, the blackened cod. This tasted like no other cod I ever had. I couldn't get enough of its spicy and sweet combination.
We complimented the meal with the waiter's suggestion of sake and we tried some wasabi Bloody Mary's and we polished off the meal with the box dessert of a chocolate dish with green tea ice cream. The drinks and dessert were all great, but the meal itself was the treat. I've never had such a flavorful meal where so many dishes came out (all in the order the chef suggested) and each one was better than the next. I will definitely be back, but only with a group of at least 4 so we can go to town again.
The topper was the normal star sighting there. In the back were Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, and director Sydney Pollack sitting together. When we were saying our goodbyes outside, Nicole and Sean walked out right next to us. We all smiled at each other and went our separate ways. A truly great night.
