all night diners/restaurants

Good Morning.

What are some good all-night restaurants in the city?

Specifically, I am looking for the sort of place where you can have a good cup of coffee and sit and read for a long time around 3AM. If they have really good food, or even just a single tasty pastry, that's a plus, but what I really need is coffee and a well-lit place to sit and mull over it before dawn.

In Los Angeles, the San Gabriel valley is full of places you can go to in the middle of the night and get anything from a bad steak and lobster dinner with an avocado milkshake to a plate of bad fried noodles and an "egg cream soda" that consists of a raw egg at the bottom of a glass of salty soda water. I would get a corner table, order some bad noodles and a cup of coffee, and occasionally a delicious kumquat milkshake, and I could sit and read for ever. Well, that's not really what I'm looking for - a diner or a cafe with good food would be much better - but the important part was the coffee and the sitting.

If I have to go to another burrough, I could, but a Manhattan location would be ideal.

Any leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good Night.
