I know I'm about 6 weeks late, but I just heard about the closing of Niederstein's (I currently live in Pennsylvania).
Last ate there as recently as Christmas Day...one of the few decent places open on Dec. 25.
I thought the food was still above-average. True, the sauerbraten (which I had ordered on Christmas 2003) was a bit dry and mass-produced tasting, but other items, such as the wiener schnitzel, and side vegetables, were perfectly fine.
I heard there was some family issues surrounding the desire to sell, but the place was probably doing a decent business. I mean, with those neighboring cemetaries, they must have been the logical choice for a post-graveside luncheon.
Anyway, this post won't be helpful to anyone, as the place has served its last meal. This is my eulogy, I guess (yet another function of Chowhound).............................
