Had a very nice meal at Nice Matin last night.
I started with a very intense cream of watercress soup. So fresh, peppery and pure tasting. It was drizzled with a lemony creme fraiche.
Then I had the Tuesday night special of braised veal cheeks, on top of saffron risotto with a tomato/orange sauce. The veal had a miraculous texture that was both plump and perky, yet offered almost no resistance to the fork. Someone in the kitchen really knows how to braise--I think this texture is achieved by carefully keeping the liquid below boiling point at all times. The risotto was perfectly al dente and seasoned with restraint (I hate over-saffronization).
Dessert was a perfectly executed pot de creme flavored with Earl Grey.
It's so nice to find a restaurant of this quality on the Upper West Side!
