El Caserio, which serves Ecuardorian cuisine, is another one of those strip mall gems.
Admittedly, I am NO EXPERT on foodstuffs from Ecuardor, but I have had the food before when I spent a summer there many, many moons ago.
The stuff served at El Caserio is tasty. It's got the Ecuardorian staples, empanadas, humitas and patacones. We tried all of them and the patacones were addictive - if I weren't careful I could've filled up on these little balls.
My friend informed me that Llapingachos is a staple in Ecuardor - so we tried it. This is my first time ever having this dish and I can only say that it's basically a cheese and mashed potato pancake -- a dish that would make Dr. Atkins turn over in his grave. Topped with aji, these were fabulous. The shrimp ceviche was a bit odd for me (as was the shrimp in peanut sauce). The pork stew, however, was very well done - smoky and tender.
Worth a visit if in the neighborhood.
