nice dinner w/ dad -- food and atmosphere important (probably below 34th)

Once again my father is coming to town and I've been giving the task of picking a place to go. The directive is "like Hearth," but not Hearth, as we went another time he came into town. Both of us loved it.

I'm trying to think of a place that has food on the Hearth or maybe just below level, and also has a somewhat casual atmosphere. Downtown locations are prefered. Things that are off the list because we've already been are Lupa, WD 50, and 71 Clinton. Off the list because I've already been are Little Giant and Alias.

Places I am thinking about are Babbo, Blue Hill, Patria, and Esca. But I have no idea if Patria is still any good (for all I know it might be gone), and my image of the atmosphere at the last two does nothing for me. I'll be going after work, and while I can throw on something nicer to wear that day, there is something that is a bit off-putting to me about dining with a bunch of people out on business expense accounts -- it creates an oddly formal/stuffy atmosphere if you ask me.

So please, more suggestions! Food wise I'd rather stay away from Asian/Asian influenced, but otherwise I'm open. I thought of Esca because the crudo would be something special. Price wise, obviously fairly expensive is okay, but I'd rather stay away from places where you feel like things are outrageously expensive (i.e. the only entree under $30 shouldn't be a vegetable plate). Downtown locations probably work better.

Thanks in advance!
