Napa Rose - Quick Dinner tonight

Some friends of ours called and said... "How about we go to dinner tonight and see a movie? Our daughter will babysit the kids for you while we're out." Sounds like a fun casual evening, and it's always good when the pals supply the babysitter.

So we decide (it's only 10 minutes away) to go to the movies at Downtown Disney, and just eat something there. En route they ask me... "Where should we eat?" I say, "I don't know, let's just figure it out"... They're shocked... I'm supposed to be this food freak, and I hadn't planned the meal yet? Is the sky falling? Go figure.

It's around 5:30pm and we decide on trying to get a quick bite if possible at Napa Rose... why not. I was dubious, as it is a Saturday night, and getting a table might be tough. Turns out, luck was with us, they had a no-show and were able to accomodate us. Said hi to chef Andrew Sutton on the way to the table and he remembered us, that was nice.

I had the foie gras with corn cake & nectarine sauce, and the duck/ricotta ravioli, my wife had the soup (can't remember which, but it was a tomato base with navy bean... I think, didn't taste it) and an entree portion of their scallops in a lemon/vanilla sauce... generally a signature appetizer. The pals had the soup and the salmon, and salad and chicken. Didn't taste theirs so can't tell you what the specifics were. I had a glass of Inniskillin Vidal Ice Wine with the foie gras and we had a bottle of the Soter Pinot Noir, Beacon Hill. Great wine. Tony Soter is the man. All the food was excellent, as usual.

Skipped dessert since we had movie that was supposed to start a little after 7pm. They were fantastic in accomodating us and getting us through the meal quickly. The chef also sent out a refreshing little amuse of melons and goat cheese which were great. He recently got back from a trip to Tuscany, and you can see of that influence on the menu.

The biggest surprise of the night was when our pals surprised us by picking up the tab. Crazy. Needless to say, we were very grateful. Blew me away.

Before leaving, I had a quick word with the chef and I set up a special tasting menu dinner for the four of us next week at the counter there and I am going to raid my wine cellar for some SERIOUS wines that will blow the tops of our heads off... Should be fun. I'll try and post about that meal.

A great meal is always made better by excellent company... life is good.
