the most mysterious restaurant in NYC???

just came across Ed levine's BEST cheesecake article in the march 17th TIMES. a melt in your mouth piece. but what caught my eye was his account of RAO's, which he called "the fabled Italian restaurant" at 114th and Pleasant Ave. in East Harlem. he went there trying, evidentally unsuccessfully, to sample their famed cheesecake. "Reservations are not accepted at Rao's as much as they are conferred." and he added: "Repeated calls to the restaurant's owner, Frankie Pellegrino, were not returned. There may have been a reason for this: Mr. Pellegrino's nickname, known to many who have asked him for a table, is Frankie NO." and the restaurant's bartender is a guy called NICKY THE VEST-- for the 142 vests he owns.

ANYWAY: is this a restaurant?? a mafia social club??
something from HBO's THE SOPRANOS?? has anyone actually eaten there?? what is it like?? and why is a "fabled" Italian joint in East Harlem of all places??
